The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study at any accredited U.S College or University.

Background and overview of the Coolidge Presidential Scholarship

The Coolidge Scholarship program sponsored by the Coolidge Foundation in honor of President Calvin Coolidge, who was known for his commitment to public service, intellectual curiosity, and strong belief in the value of education.

The Foundation was established in 1960 by John Coolidge, the president’s son, along with a group of fellow Coolidge enthusiasts. The Foundation is based in Plymouth Notch, Vermont president Coolidge’s birthplace.

The foundation seeks to greatly increase Americans’ understanding of President Coolidge and the values he promoted.

One of the unique aspects of the Coolidge Scholarship is that it is not limited to a specific field of study. Recipients may pursue any course of study at any accredited college or university in the United States. This allows students to follow their passions and explore a wide range of academic interests without the burden of financial debt.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria for the Coolidge Scholarship

The eligibility and selection criteria for the scholarships are highlighted below:

  • The scholarship is open to high school juniors who are citizens or legal residents of the United States.
  • Applicants cannot be the immediate family member of any current employee or trustee of the Coolidge Scholars Program or the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation.
  • Only U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents are eligible to apply.
  • Primary Criteria;  Coolidge scholars must possess a distinguished academic record. You will demonstrate an uncommon academic depth and intellectual curiosity.
  • Interest in Public Policy and Appreciation of Coolidge Values, humility and services.

In order for an application to be considered, all application materials, including the two letters of reference, must be submitted by the deadline.

Selection Timeline

Application Launch: Fall 2022   for 2023 cohort.

Application Deadline: February 23, 2023

By Summer 2023:

  • All applicants will be notified of their outcomes.
  • Applicants can check their outcomes by logging into their application portal.
  • Applicants who are named finalists will be contacted directly by phone and invited to Finalist Interview Weekend.
  • Newly selected Coolidge Scholars will spend an orientation week at the Coolidge Foundation in Plymouth Notch, Vermont.

Coolidge Scholarships Application Process

The application process for the Coolidge Scholarship is highly competitive. Applicants are evaluated based on their academic achievements, course rigor, and standardized test scores.

They must also submit an essay that demonstrates their intellectual curiosity and a record of leadership and service.

Finalists for the scholarship are invited to participate in a rigorous selection weekend flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury.

Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application.
