There is no specified target or standard of achievement; what is accomplished will depend on an individual’s flying ability and any limitations arising from a particular disability, whether physical, mental, or fatigue related.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship

To be eligible for the Flying Scholarship for the Disabled applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• The Weight must not exceed 115kgs or below (230 lbs).
• Resident in the UK.
• Allowed to drive by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).

Selection Process

The selection process is designed to ensure that we offer scholarships to the disabled people who will have the greatest life-changing experience.

In February each year the experienced team, consisting of FSDP Trustees, medical team, and flying instructors, assesses the applications in a pre-selection meeting. Based on this assessment, some applicants are invited to the next stage at RAF Cranwell in March.

During the three-day selection process at RAF Cranwell, candidates undergo two interviews, a medical evaluation to ensure they are fit for flying, and a chance to experience climbing in and out of an aircraft similar to the one they might fly and also have the opportunity to meet our flying instructors and ask questions.

Scholar mentors are available to guide and support candidates throughout the process, which takes place at RAF Cranwell in Lincolns.

Benefits and Numbers of the Scholarship

The flying training, ground school, accommodation, and food expenses are covered by the scholarship. However, scholars need to take care of their own travel costs and must have their own vehicle to commute to and from the flying school.

The number of scholarships, and their type, will vary each year because it dependent on the generosity of organization sponsors and donors.
