Nigeria LNG limited as part of its huge investment in social initiatives in education is pleased to announce NLNG Scholarship schemes application is open to interested and qualified candidates in various fields of study.

The scholarship scheme is open annually to all levels of students at post-primary, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels to encourage academic excellence and support human capital development in Nigeria through the support and growth of a pool of high potential Nigerian graduates and professionals with a competitive advantage, assisting high performing basic six pupils in company’s host communities to access post-primary education.

Summary of NLNG Scholarships

Nigeria LNG has been a success story since its incorporation in 1989 to produce natural gas and LNG for export and it remains focused on education and human capital development as areas of special significance because these two areas are intrinsic and essential components of national development.

However, NLNG scholarship kicked off its Post Primary Scholarship in 2012, NLNG Undergraduate Scholarship component started its intervention program for host communities in 1998 and was opened up to the rest of Nigeria in 2003 and NLNG overseas Postgraduate scholarship scheme was launched in October 2012.

Scholarship Amount

Undergraduate Scholarship – N150, 000 per annum throughout the course duration of each awardee.
Overseas Post Graduate Scholarship- USD67,500 per awardee per study however, the Actual spend per awardee ranges from USD45,000 to USD67,500, depending on the course of study.

Total Number of Awardees

Post Primary Scholarship- 342 beneficiaries
Undergraduate Scholarship- 300 beneficiaries (Increased from 150 to 300 beneficiaries/annum since 2018/2019 academic session)
Overseas Post Graduate Scholarship- 15 beneficiaries to study in leading UK universities.

Scholarship Categories

The NLNG scholarships scheme has three main categories listed below:

NLNG Post Primary Scholarship

The post-primary scholarship scheme started in 2012 with 28 beneficiaries and has grown to 342 beneficiaries by 2019 and has expended a sun of $2.697million since inception to assist high-performing basic six pupils in the company’s host communities to access quality post-primary education.

Prospective pupils are admitted to the scheme through the application on the company’s website based on advertised criteria. A selection test is then conducted to place the best top candidates onto the scheme.

Eligibility criteria

Must be an indigene of NLNG host communities.
Be a basic 5 or 6 pupil
Provide his/her Basic Five/Six result
Must provide an attestation letter signed & stamped by the Head Teacher of his/her school with the contact number of the Head Teacher included
Provide an indigene identification letter signed by the community head or Chief in his/her community.
Provide a letter of identification from his/her Local Government Council.
Must not be a child or ward of Nigeria LNG Limited employee.

NLNG Undergraduate Scholarship

This scheme was founded in 1998 as a critical component of the NLNG education intervention program for the host communities however, it was opened up to the rest of Nigeria in 2003.

The scholarship award value is N150, 000 per annum for the course duration of each awardee. The scheme was reviewed from 150 beneficiaries a year to 300 starting from the 2018/2019 academic year.

A total of 3,416 undergraduates from various universities in Nigeria have benefited from the scheme since its inception and with a total investment of N768.9m ($2.5130m) million. The introduction of online application and use of social media for information dissemination in 2012 made the selection process more efficient and cost-effective, and increased awareness of the Scheme

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible all prospective beneficiaries must fulfill the following criteria:

Have excellent/very good grade SSCE result West Africa School Certificate (WASC) or National Examination Council (NECO)
Letter of Admission from Joint Admissions & Matriculation Board (JAMB) to any Nigerian university
Be a certified Full-Time Year-One student of any Nigerian University at the time of application
Must not be on any other Scholarship Award from other companies or agencies
Not be a spouse, child, ward, or direct relation of Nigeria LNG Limited employee.

NLNG Overseas Post Graduate Scholarship

This scheme started in October 2012 with an annual total intake of 15 beneficiaries to study in leading UK universities. The value of the scholarship is USD67,500 per awardee per study. Actual spend per awardee however ranges from USD45,000 to USD67,500, depending on the course of study.

The scheme covers these areas of study: Environmental Studies, Engineering, Management, Accountancy, Economics, Information Technology, Geology, Banking, Law, and Medicine.

How Much Is the NLNG Scholarship Worth?

The NLNG Scholarship worth varies depending on the course of study, duration of study and the level of study either undergraduate or postgraduate studies:

For undergraduate the value #100,000 – #300,000/academic year.

Oversea postgraduate scholarship: between 9 and 11 million naira.

Eligibility criteria and NLNG Scholarship Requirement

Eligible candidate must have a provisional admission at leading UK universities to study any of the following disciplines: Engineering, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences, Information Technology, Law, Medicine
Possess a minimum of 2nd Class Upper degree in a relevant field of study
Completion of the NYSC program
Proficient in the English language with an IELTS score of not less than an 8.0
Must not be older than 30 years of age
Be a Nigerian national resident in Nigeria
Provide identification documents from the candidate local government of origin
Possess a valid international passport
Be able to obtain a tier-4 visa upon being successful
Not be a direct relative of staff of Nigeria LNG Limited
